Lake County Assessor Hank Adams has decided against running for the District 15 seat in the Indiana House of Representatives after talking with his constituents.
“Voters elected me for four years and the large majority want me to continue as Lake County assessor, but said they would not vote for me if I ran for state representative,” Adams said in a statement released Tuesday. He thanked voters for making the decision so difficult for him.
Adams was elected to his current post in 2010, becoming the first Republican to win countywide office in 60 years. He beat Democrat Carol Ann Seaton by 668 votes.
The new 15th District includes Schererville, Dyer, most of St. John, and four precincts in Griffith — nearly all of which falls within the boundaries of St. John Township. Prior to his term as county assessor, Adams was elected four times as St. John Township assessor.
If Adams had decided to run, he would have faced Schererville Town Councilman Hal Slager in the Republican primary on May 8. Currently, the only candidate to file for the Democratic primary is former Lake County Councilman Thomas O’Donnell.
