Sen. Lugar, challenger Mourdock set April debate

Updated: March 24, 2012 9:00AM

INDIANAPOLIS — U.S. Sen. Richard Lugar and his Republican primary challenger Richard Mourdock have agreed to an April debate hosted by the Indiana Debate Commission.

The commission said Wednesday that Lugar and Mourdock, who’s Indiana’s state treasurer, will debate April 11 at the studios of Indianapolis public television station WFYI.

Mourdock is a tea party favorite who’s seeking to deny Lugar a seventh term in the Senate.

The debate commission says April’s Senate debate will be the only primary debate it will host before the May 8 primary.

Commission President Max Jones says the commission expects to host as many as five debates this year from the primary through the general election.
