Indiana Department of Natural Resources officers continued their search Tuesday for a New York man who disappeared beneath the waters of Lake Michigan on Monday when his inflatable boat flipped over in Beverly Shores.

DNR conservation officer Terri Arlandson said officers are still in recovery mode — with officers on boats and jet skis out in the lake and on the beach in four-wheelers — in their search for 31-year-old Leonel Dominguez of the Bronx. Dominguez disappeared after his inflatable boat flipped over due to high winds and floated out of reach. He and his friend Evelyn Hernandez struggled to swim back to shore. Hernandez was rescued by Lockport, Ill., resident Nick Dominguez, but Leonel Dominguez was nowhere to be found.

The DNR has expanded the search area from Beverly Shores eastward to Michigan City. Around 3 p.m., the DNR started focusing on a surface search rather than sending divers in the murky, choppy waters. Both the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and the Lake County Sheriff’s Department are aiding in the search. Emergency personnel will suspend the search at dusk and resume efforts at 6 a.m. Wednesday.
