Gary baby who fell from third-floor window recovering

Updated: August 20, 2012 11:54AM

GARY — Ten-month-old Kyan Powell is recovering “nicely” at Comer Children’s Hospital in Chicago after his tumble from a third-story window Tuesday morning.

“He’s doing well. We believe he will be moved from the ICU tonight,” Comer spokeswoman Tiffany Washington said late Wednesday afternoon.

Kyan’s mother, Tiesha Powell, 26, was asleep when Kyan fell out a bedroom window and landed outside about 7:40 a.m. A neighbor on the first floor of 578 Van Buren St. heard him crying and brought him upstairs to his mother.

Powell told police she was asleep. Her 8-year-old daughter also lives in the apartment where the screen where Kyan fell had been loose for some time.

The toddler’s mother and grandmother were at the hospital with the boy. A neck brace he wore when first admitted has been removed, Washington said.

Gary police said the incident appeared to be accidental and did not expect to investigate further.
