VALPARAISO -- A call from a suicidal man prompted police to close Roosevelt Road from Beech Street to Evans Avenue for about four hours Tuesday morning. The standoff ended with no one injured and the man being evaluated at Porter hospital, police said.
At about 6:10 a.m., Manuel Navarro, 40, the owner of Navarro Tax Pro, at 1202 Formula Drive in a strip mall just off Roosevelt, called 911 threatening to harm himself with a gun.
The Porter County SWAT team, Valparaiso police, the Valparaiso Fire Department and paramedics responded, seeing Navarro alone inside his business. After spending some time on the phone with Navarro, the SWAT team took him into custody just before 10 a.m. and an ambulance transported him to Porter hospital.
Navarro will face criminal charges, said Sgt. Michael Grennes, public information officer for the Valparaiso Police Department, but he declined to give specifics.
