Seat belts saved lives of Schererville teens in I-65 crash, police say

DEMOTTE — Two people avoided serious injury Friday after their car rolled three times in a single-car crash on southbound Interstate 65 because they were wearing their seat belts, according to the Indiana State Police.
The crash occurred at about 5:50 p.m. at the 231 mile marker about a mile north of the DeMotte exit after Brandon M. Stefano, 18, of Schererville, the driver of a 2002 Chevrolet Camaro, swerved right to avoid a tire tread in the road. Stefano then corrected back to the left and went off the road where the Camaro rolled three times and came to rest with the driver’s side against a tree. The T-tops on the roof of the Camaro were open at the time.
Both Stefano and his passenger, Jessica L. Kaminsky, 18, also of Schererville, were wearing their seat belts and stayed inside the vehicle. Both were taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Crown Point for treatment of cuts and abrasions. The left lane of I-65 was closed about 45 minutes. The Camaro was a total loss.
