GARY — As he ran from gunfire early Sunday morning, Latarus Foster was almost home when he collapsed with gunshot wounds in his back.
Foster, 29, of 3361 Maryland St., was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 3 a.m. on the west side of the street near his home.
Patrolmen Daniel Perryman and Tamara Hall were the first to arrive on the scene and found the victim face down on the parkway.
Residents in the area told police they heard shots and saw the victim running east toward his house. Other witnesses saw suspects fleeing from the scene after the shooting stopped.
Foster was released from prison earlier this year after pleading guilty to rape in November 2009 for an incident that occurred in Lake Station.
Sgt. Larry Robertson is investigating the homicide, the 29th violent death in the city this year.
A year ago Sunday, Gary had recorded 29 homicides for the year.
Robertson said anyone with information about the identity of suspects can call him at 881-7545.
The department’s anonymous crime tip hot line is 1-866-274-6347.
Investigators are also attempting to determine if three bones found in the 2200 block of Williams Street on Saturday are human.
New owners of a house on the block were cutting overgrown grass when they found three bones that appear to be human.
The evidence was delivered to the Lake County coroner’s office for further study.
