Gary police records office closed one more day due to paint fumes

Updated: October 7, 2012 7:58AM

GARY — The records office for the Gary Police Department remained closed all day Wednesday after paint fumes forced many workers to relocate about lunchtime Tuesday.

Inmates from the Indiana State Prison were painting jail cells Tuesday when the odor began spreading through the first floor of the Public Safety Facility.

Although an outside door and fans vented the work area, Cmdr. Pete Sormaz acknowledged that the fumes moved through the ventilations system to the areas of the front desk and records area. When the secure-access doors to that area were opened, customers waiting in the lobby and workers in other offices began to complain.

Sormaz said inmates returned on Wednesday to finish three more cells. He said a different paint was being used Wednesday.

He said he expects the records office, where the public can obtain police, crash and tow reports, will be open as usual on Thursday morning.
