GARY — A Gary man was critically wounded Thursday morning as he began merging onto the Borman Expressway.
Tyron Hopkins, 43, was the driver of a white 1996 Ford Escort and was on the ramp to eastbound Interstate 94 from southbound Grant Street about 10:39 a.m. when another car pulled up next to him and someone inside started shooting.
Gary Fire Department medics treated Hopkins at the scene then took him to The Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus for injuries that Indiana State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Ann Wojas described as “life-threatening.”
The Indiana State Police agency is investigating the shooting, but declined to release any information about the suspect or suspect vehicle.
“Evidence at the scene was collected and detectives are seeking a person of interest,” Wojas said.
Several area police stations broadcast a description of a white or light-colored Kia with front-end damage and possibly broken windows that may have been involved in the shooting. Dispatchers announced that occupants of the car were wanted for questioning only.
Anyone with information can call ISP Detective Brian Kubiak at 696-6242.
