Man accused of battering pregnant girlfriend

Updated: October 26, 2012 6:13AM

Battery and domestic battery charges have been filed in Lake Superior Court against an East Chicago man charged with battering his pregnant ex-girlfriend.

Reynaldo Dante Phillips, of the 4800 block of McCook Avenue, is charged in the incident reported Wednesday afternoon.

Cheyanne Cathey, who is six months pregnant, told police Phillips came to her home in the 1100 block of May Street in Hammond and told her he was taking their 2-year-old son. She refused, but he put the child in his car and locked the doors. Cathey told police she noticed the passenger side window was halfway down, so she put her hand inside.

Phillips grabbed her wrist tightly, yanked her arm, and caused her stomach to hit the car door.

She managed to unlock the door, get inside and reach for her son when Phillips grabbed her hair and wrist, pushed her face into the seat and started hitting her. When she hit him back, he punched her in the face and chest and started kicking her, the probable cause affidavit states.

She was treated at Franciscan Alliance St. Margaret Hammond.
