DEMOTTE —Three people were taken to area hospitals after a multivehicle crash Friday night on Interstate 65 about two miles south of the Indiana 10 exit.

The crash closed the southbound lanes of the highway for more than an hour. The road reopened about 9:50 p.m.

One of the three victims, Keegan J. Hernandez, 18, of Crown Point, was airlifted to the hospital after being extricated from his vehicle. All of the victims sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to the Indiana State Police.

The initial investigation showed Hernandez was traveling north on I-65 through the construction zone when, for unknown reasons, he left the northbound lanes, went off the roadway through the median and into the southbound lanes, Sgt. Ann Wojas said.

Matthew Wolfe, 30, of Wilmette, Ill., was traveling south in the left lane when Hernandez’s vehicle struck the front end of his car. His car came to rest in the left lane facing the wrong direction.

Wolfe and his passenger, Alexis Hausfeld, 27, of Springboro, Ohio, were taken to Franciscan St. Anthony Health in Crown Point for their injuries.

Hernandez’s vehicle then hit another car in the southbound lanes. Two people in that vehicle refused treatment.

Hernandez’s car stopped 30 feet west of the outer shoulder in the grassy area. Hernandez was cited for unsafe lane movement.
