A man is accused of taking a 14-year-old, special-education Hammond girl across state lines and forcing her to have sex with him, according to a probable cause affidavit.
The affidavit, unsealed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court in Hammond, says Carey Ray, who also goes by Carey West and Carey Tyrone-West, met the girl on the social website Meetme.com. The two then exchanged hundreds of text messages and finally met in person on Oct. 5 near the Munster Target. They tried to meet again the next day, but the girl’s mother discovered a text message and wouldn’t let her go. When Ray asked what happened, she replied in a text that “You know everything. I am 14.”
They met again on Oct. 8, however, when he picked her up at her house and took her to a Lansing, Ill., hotel, according to the affidavit.
Ray then gave her marijuana and alcohol. After about an hour, he started to undress her. When she objected, he told her he had paid for the room and wanted to use it. He then held her down and had sex with her without a condom, despite the girl trying to fight him off, the affidavit claims.
He then took her back home, and she told her mother the next day about what happened.
The girl’s mother told police that the girl attends special education classes when in school and that she receives Supplemental Security Income checks, which go to the elderly and disabled to provide for basic needs.
Ray was arrested Tuesday and was ordered held without bond pending a hearing set for Thursday.
