When Archbishop Joseph Tobin starts leading the Catholic Archdiocese of Indianapolis, it will be a happy reunion for Gary Bishop Dale Melczek.
As an auxiliary bishop of Detroit, Melczek met regularly with Tobin in the 1980s when the latter was pastor of Holy Redeemer Parish in Detroit. Pope Benedict XVI appointed Tobin to the Indianapolis post Thursday.
Melczek, who became bishop in 1992, says Tobin brings great gifts “not only Indianapolis but the province of Indiana. He brings such a calm and serene approach to addressing complex problems.” The province of Indiana includes all five dioceses in the state.
Tobin’s installation ceremony is Dec. 3.
