Gary man killed while home for lunch

A Gary man was shot and killed Friday afternoon after he disrupted a home invasion during his lunch break, according to his family.
Jerry Hood, 48, of the 2200 block of West 8th Avenue, had been at his job with American Freight when he and a co-worker went to Hood’s house for lunch, Hood’s sister Beverly Franklin said.
Police told the family the pair saw something was wrong and Hood sent his co-worker to check one door while he checked the other, Franklin said.
“They say he had a broom in his hand,” his other sister Carol Neely said as the family members stood across the street from the house, watching police work.
Information from police on the shooting was not available as of Friday afternoon.
According to a release from the Lake County Coroner’s office, Hood died from multiple gun shot wounds.
Neely said she got a call about what happened then had to call her sister, Franklin, to give her the news.
“I couldn’t believe it,” Franklin said.
The sisters said their brother was loved by everyone and was raising his 16-year-old daughter, whose mother is dead, alone.
“Now she has nobody,” Franklin said.
Hood loved to throw dinners for friends and would have a barbecue about every other week, they said.
