Police looking for witnesses to Friday’s fatal home invasion

Updated: November 22, 2012 6:47AM

GARY — Police are seeking help from witnesses who saw two suspects running from Jerry Hood’s home Friday afternoon.

Hood, 48, stopped there for lunch about 12:45 p.m. and saw a window was broken and called police.

He apparently then confronted the burglars inside 2211 W. 8th Ave. and was shot and killed.

Two black men, both in their late teens or early 20s, were seen running from the house. Both were possibly wearing masks.

Investigators aren’t saying if the pair took any items from the home as they fled.

Hood, a truck driver, had reported a burglary at his home earlier this year, police said. He lived there with his teenage daughter, who was summoned from her classes to learn her father had been killed.

Relatives said her mother died previously. Hood was a driver for American Freight. His company truck was parked outside the home when police responded to the scene.

Police searched the area but were unable to locate the suspects.

Sgt. Larry Robertson is investigating the homicide. He asked that anyone with information about the suspects call him at 881-7545.
