GARY — None of the 15 tenants living in an apartment building at 816 Pennsylvania St. were injured Sunday night when the roof collapsed.
City spokeswoman Chelsea Whittington said Gary’s police, fire, redevelopment and building departments responded to the scene. The collapse was caused by the weight of shingles being stored on the top of the building in anticipation of a new roof.
The landlord found temporary housing for the 15 tenants living in the six occupied units.
Contractors boarded up the building and placed a tarp over the hole in the roof. Gary police — at the landlord’s expense — guarded the building overnight until it was secured.
