Man pleads to reckless homicide days before trial

A Gary man scheduled to stand trial on a murder charge in a 1998 shooting has pleaded guilty to a lesser offense.
Samuel Fabela, 31, pleaded guilty to reckless homicide in the death of Jeremy Hubbard, who was killed by a single gunshot wound to the chest on Feb. 9, 1998, in an alley in Gary during a drug deal. Fabela and Hubbard were in a car talking about a drug sale when the two men got into an argument and Fabela opened fire.
Fabela was charged with murder in May, 14 years after the homicide. His case was scheduled for a jury trial starting Monday.
Defense attorney Richard Wolter Jr. and deputy prosecutor Kathleen O’Halloran will argue an appropriate sentence on Nov. 26 before Lake Superior Court Judge Salvador Vasquez. Fabela faces two to eight years.
