Vigil will honor murder victim, days before killer is sentenced

HAMMOND — Just days away from the sentencing of his admitted killer, the family of Domonique Greenlaw will hold a candlelight vigil to honor his life.
“He was always helping someone. He was helping someone, giving them a ride, when he was shot,” his fiancee’s mother, Becky Erenberg, said Friday.
Greenlaw, 25, was shot as he stepped out of his car in Tarrytown, his childhood neighborhood in Gary. His back seat passenger, Maurice Beckham, 30, a long-time friend from high school, shot and killed Greenlaw.
Beckham pleaded guilty but mentally ill and will be sentenced Tuesday.
Erenberg, and Greenlaw’s fiance, Lindsey Aunigan, invite the victim’s friends to join them at 4 p.m. Sunday at their home, 921 Spruce St. “for food and fellowship,” Erenberg said.
“We’ve been to all the court hearings,” Erenberg said. “Everyone who is here can come to the sentencing.”
Greenlaw’s mother, who last saw her son in 2007, lives in Georgia and hasn’t been able to attend the court sessions. She and other relatives will be here for the vigil and sentencing, however.
“Then it will be over, finally,” Erenberg said.
