VALPARAISO — A 15-year-old male allegedly tried to attack his mother with a knife when she took away his cell phone.

No one was seriously injured in the struggle at about 7:10 p.m. Monday, which began when the 40-year-old woman asked the teen to clean the dishes.

When he started an argument instead, she got his phone and threw it into the garage. Next, he grabbed a steak knife and walked toward his mother, he admitted to police, though he said, “I don’t know what I was going to do with it.”

Before he could reach her, his father tackled him and wrestled away the knife but, undeterred, the teen allegedly got back up and hit the woman and choked her with both hands, according to the police report. When his father pulled him off her, he ran from the house in the 2000 block of Blackhawk Road, near Flint Lake, but returned while officers still were present.

The woman had redness and swelling but said her breathing had not been affected. Neither male had injuries.

Police took the teen to the Porter County Juvenile Detention Center on a felony charge of intimidation with a deadly weapon and misdemeanor battery causing injury.
