Police in Prescott, Ariz., expect Jane Leslie Carpenter will be extradited quickly to face charges there for killing her husband 10 years ago

Carpenter, 61, of Crown Point, was arrested Monday morning as she arrived to meet with a client in LaPorte. Carpenter owns Jane Leslie Designs, an interior design company she runs from her home.

She is charged with the June 2002 stabbing/beating death of her husband Brent Carpenter, who was 71 years old — 20 years older than his wife — when she called police to report he was dead.

“Investigators are conducting interviews with known acquaintances, co-workers and friends,” Lt. Ken Morley of the Prescott police said Tuesday.

Their investigations supervisor will meet with Yavapai County attorneys on Thursday to begin Carpenter’s extradition.

“It shouldn’t be a long process since Indiana’s state police assisted in the arrest,” Morley said.

Carpenter was the primary suspect in her husband’s death from the beginning. Police noted there were no signs of forced entry. Her husband had been struck on the head with a rock and stabbed in the back with a knife. He died on the kitchen floor of their Prescott home.

After his death, Carpenter returned to Indiana. She has been teaching non-credit interior design classes at Indiana University Northwest in Gary for two years.

Police in Prescott presented their evidence to prosecutors previously, but charges were rejected.

Although police asked Carpenter to remain in Arizona, she relocated.
