2 women avoid jail time in attempted theft

Updated: December 4, 2012 6:06AM

Lake Superior Court Judge Diane Ross Bosewll sentenced two women to probation and community service for attempted theft involving a senior citizen.

Breyante Smith, 20, and Shanita Lloyd, 20, both of Gary, admitted they approached a 70-year-old woman on Jan. 4 in the parking lot of Methodist Hospitals Northlake Campus in Gary and told her to “give me everything you got,” then tried to steal her purse and other belongings.

Smith’s defense attorney, Roseann Ivanovich, said her client “acted out of stress and youthfulness” after her boyfriend lapsed into unconsciousness and was hospitalized.

Lloyd’s defense attorney, John Cantrell, said his client was “scared straight” after spending a couple days in jail.

Deputy prosecutor Dekeyu Sumner argued that Lloyd, who was sentenced last week, deserved a year on home detention and one year on probation.

Boswell sentenced both women to 18 months on probation and 100 hours of community service.

Both Smith and Lloyd must write a sincere letter of apology to the victim, and both must obtain their GEDs.
