Republican candidate Hal Slager was leading Democrat Tom O’Donnell with 51 percent of the votes counted in the Indiana House District 15 race, but Slager said he didn’t know what the outcome of the race would be.
O’Donnell, who had 49 percent of the vote, could not be reached for comment.
The race pitted two Lake County veteran politicians. O’Donnell formerly served on the Lake County Council before losing his seat two years ago, and Slager serves on the Schererville Town Council president.
Because the district is a new one for the state after redistricting, it did not have an incumbent.
O’Donnell has run a platform similar to other Democrats in that he would support incentives to businesses that hire Hoosiers. Slager has said he’s concerned about the frozen tax levy’s effect on Lake County and wants to work with the state to allow communities other ways to bring in new revenue.
Slager has also expressed concern about spending disparities among public schools, arguing that districts like Lake Central School Corp. will have to cut programs because so much money is being diverted to schools faring worse on test scores.
Neither man faced opposition during the primary.
