GARY — A barrage of bullets greeted three friends as they walked to the front door of a house in Brunswick Sunday night.
One man, James Parker, 22, died in the back yard of his friend’s home. The other companions, ages 22 and 23, were not injured, police said.
The surviving witnesses told police they were about to enter a house in the 5000 block of West 7th Avenue when they saw “two or three” unknown suspects across the street and then heard gunfire.
All three men ran. One ran to the alley and jumped fences as he fled west to Durbin Street, where he called police.
Parker ran east to his friend’s backyard while the third man ran west. They met behind the house, but Parker had been wounded and collapsed. He was pronounced dead at the scene at 7 p.m.
Several cars and houses in the area of 7th Avenue, Mount Street and Matthews Street were damaged by gunfire, police said.
Residents in the area reported seeing men running after the shooting, and one suspect apparently tried to break into a car until a neighbor noticed the activity. The suspect fired at the neighbor, who ran back to his home and was not injured. Parker is the 33rd homicide of the year. By this date in 2011, the city had recorded 32 homicides.
Detective Lorenzo Davis is investigating Parker’s death. Anyone with information may call him at 881-4738.
