SOUTH HAVEN — Derek Goodman, 22, of South Haven, was arrested for felony sexual battery after reportedly putting his hand in a female friend’s underwear when she fell asleep as they watched television.
The incident allegedly happened at about 2:30 a.m. Wednesday at a home on McCool Road.
Goodman told police the 21-year-old woman always was clear she wanted to be just friends, even though he wanted a more romantic relationship.
When the woman woke up during the assault, she initially thought she was dreaming, she told police, but later confronted Goodman and he denied touching her. Still feeling uncomfortable, she called police and locked herself in her vehicle until an officer came.
Police said Goodman denied anything inappropriate happened, until police assured him they were not looking into a rape charge.
Goodman then told police he was giving the woman a foot rub, and he occasionally tries to move his hands further up her legs. Sometimes she objects, other times she says nothing, and he said he believed this was one of those times. He said the woman may have been sleeping but he wasn’t sure — that he saw her head moving and she responded, saying “uh,” when he said something to her.
