A Schererville man is charged with knowingly selling a gun to a felon while he was a deputy with the Cook County Sheriff’s Department in Chicago.
The indictment, filed Wednesday and unsealed Thursday, says that Claude Ray Hunter, 56, sold a gun to an unnamed person on Oct. 12 despite knowing that person was a felon. Felons are not legally allowed to own or possess guns.
The U.S. Attorney’s office in Hammond says that Hunter was a deputy with Cook County at the time. A representative with Cook County could not be reached for comment Friday.
Hunter was released Thursday on a $20,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned Dec. 11.
