GARY — When police arrived at Dorothy Griffin’s apartment Friday, she told them she had been attacked and beaten.

Griffin, 60, of 1934 W. 5th Ave., died Monday afternoon from injuries she received during that assault.

She was pronounced dead at The Methodists Hospitals Southlake campus from blunt force trauma, a news release from the Lake County coroner states.

Police arrived at Griffin’s apartment about 10:30 a.m. Friday and found the victim with injuries to her head, eye and face.

She said a man she called “Twin” walked her dog daily. Police learned his name was Ahkeem Scott, 18.

On Friday, he arrived and appeared agitated, telling Griffin he would not let her turn him in, the police report states. He started hitting Griffin in the face, then covered her mouth to keep her from screaming.

She was able to break away to call police.

Lt. Jack Arnold, Sgt. William Fazekas, Cpl. Laria Crews and Patrolmen Tamara Hall and Jamaal Joseph searched the area for Scott, who had jumped out a window, the police report states. He was located nearby and arrested.

He was taken to the hospital for evaluation. There, he allegedly spit on Crews and Gary Fire Department Medic Julie Dolato. Detective Roberto Figueroa began an investigation into the assault, and is now leading the investigation into the city’s 38th homicide. Scott is being held on a Lake County warrant for burglary while Figueroa prepares a case to present to prosecutors.
