GPS devices to track Portage Township school buses

Updated: January 14, 2013 7:24AM

Portage Township school administrators and parents will soon be able to track buses in real time.

Director of Support Services David Harman described the $230,000 project to the Portage Township School Board at its Wednesday night discussion meeting.

All 104 Portage school buses will be equipped with GPS devices that will track where each bus is at any time. Parents and students will be able to determine how soon a bus will arrive at the stop. “High school kids will be checking to see if they get an extra three minutes of sleep,” board member Cheryl Oprisko quipped.

The GPS equipment will be used to better manage the fleet, determine route efficiency and timeliness of stops, according to Harman, and can be used to improve fuel economy by tracking idle time of each bus.

Student drug survey

Students in Grades 6, 8, 10 and 12 will participate in a statewide Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drug survey in late February, said Debra Dudek, director of Title and Special Student Services. The survey is administered by Indiana University and sponsored by the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration.

The survey is conducted annually. “It’s a gauge of how you’re doing and what you need to do,” says Dudek.

Teachers honored

Teachers Becky Mitcheltree, fifth-grade science and social science teacher at Aylesworth Elementary School, and Stephanie Tokarski, sixth-grade mathematics and science teacher at Willowcreek Middle School, received excellence-in-teaching awards from the Hoosier Association of Science Teachers.

School chief Ric Frataccia congratulated the teachers for their, “prestigious awards.”

The board meets again on Monday for its regular board meeting.
