GARY — A 39-year-old man suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the neck in a homicide Tuesday morning in a mobile home park just northeast of Calumet High School.
When police arrived at the Caribou Mobile Home Park in the 5600 block of West 37th Avenue, a woman told them she found her 39-year-old husband bleeding from his ear and unresponsive when she returned from the grocery store at 7:42 a.m.
The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the victim as Thomas Mallory.
Cpl. Gabrielle King said Mallory was pronounced dead at the scene.
A neighbor, Wendy Morris, said a couple and five children lived in the trailer.
The small trailer park contains about a dozen mobile homes, many which are for rent.
No one answered the door at the white and green mobile home Tuesday morning. A pet dish containing water sat on the porch as a small black cat wandered around the home. A red Ford Taurus was parked in the driveway.
Morris said the family had lived in the mobile home for about a year. She believed the children ranged in age from high school down to age 11. “The kids were good people,” she said. “We don’t know too much about the parents.” Morris said her son attended Calumet High School with one of the children.
It’s the 41st homicide in the city this year.
Detective Alex Jones is the lead investigator and can be reached at 881-7477 if anyone has any information regarding this case.
