GARY — A 17-year-old boy told authorities he shot and killed his father as he slept in their mobile home Wednesday morning.
Thomas Mallory Jr. has been charged with murder in the death of Thomas Mallory Sr., 39. The shooting took place at Caribou Mobile Home Park in the 5600 block of West 37th Court across from Calumet High School.
Angela Mallory told police her husband was sleeping when she went to the store with her daughter about 7 a.m. They returned home about 7:20 a.m. and found her husband in a side bedroom.
Mallory was pronounced dead at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.
Thomas Mallory Jr. told police he killed his father with a shotgun because his father was abusive and he feared his father was going to plant drugs in his room and call police, according to the charging documents.
He told police he woke up about 6 a.m., retrieved the shotgun and asked his mother to go to the store for him to get something to eat. He said after his mother left, he shot his father and that his father’s face was covered by a blanket.
Mallory said after the shooting, he placed the gun in the family’s Ford Taurus, wrapped in a blue blanket, after his mother returned. Two family members were still in the house when he shot his father, Mallory said.
Angela Mallory said she had not seen the shotgun in the house and did not know how it ended up in her car.
She told police she had previous altercations with her husband and that her sons had witnessed an incident in which he battered her and she called police.
