A worker cuts through a toppled stucture for easier removal as crews repair the support structure and tracks on the South Shore track east of the Gary Metro Station in Gary, Ind. Saturday December 29, 2012. According to the South Shore, all train service is suspended while crews make repairs following an early morning accident on Interstate 90 involving a truck that lost its load of steel onto the tracks. The first westbound South Shore commuter train to travel after service had been suspended for most of Saturday was stopped due to electrical problems, according to an alert from the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.
The Westbound South Shore Train No. 610 from Michigan City, which was scheduled to arrive in Chicago’s Millennium station at 8:52 p.m., was stopped at the Dune Park station in Chesterton, the alert said. The train returned to service after a 52-minute delay.
Earlier Saturday, Indiana State Police say a semi tractor-trailer jack-knifed on Interstate 90 about 5 a.m., sending its load of steel coils rolling down an embankment. Those coils snapped electrical lines and damaged the tracks below.
No South Shore trains were involved in the accident and no one was injured, according to the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District.
Police said it was snowing at the time of the crash and roads were icy.
Materials had to be removed with use of a crane, said Gerald Hanas, NICTD executive director. The tracks were cleared around 2 p.m., and South Shore crews began on repairing the track and damaged electrical lines.
“It was a fair amount of damage,” Hanas said. “It was a short section of the track, but a fair amount of damage done to the track.”
NICTD will update its website — http://www.nictd.com/delays.htm — when service resumes on the line that runs from South Bend to Chicago.
