Three happy families got an early jump on a happy New Year’s Day, as they each had the first child to be born in Lake, Porter and LaPorte counties.
Lake County: Maya James Gutierrez arrived at 4:17 a.m., at Saint Anthony’s Medical Center in Crown Point. She weighed 8 pounds and measured 21 inches.
Her parents, Kimberly and Rudy Gutierrez, weren’t sure when Maya would be ready. Her due date was Jan. 2, but the two parents disagreed on whether she’d be born earlier or later.
“I thought we were going to have a Christmas Baby,” Kimberly said.
“I actually thought she was going to be later,” Rudy said. “Although I was kind of hoping for her to come earlier.
“I was hoping for that tax deduction,” he joked, “but I guess we all went over that fiscal cliff together.”
Maya joins her sister, Lexi, 12, at their home in Cedar Lake.
Porter County: Sylas Cates was born at 12:42 a.m. at Porter Regional Hospital. He weighed 8 pounds, 6 ounces, and measured 201/2 inches.
His parents, Gina Trimble and Steve Cates of Portage, were happy to have a healthy child, even after a challenging delivery.
“I’m glad to see he came out with 10 fingers and 10 toes,” Steve said, “and I hope this will shine a light on the rest of his life.”
Sylas was expected around Dec. 26, Gina said, but he ended up being one of the first children born in the new year.
He joins two brothers, T.J. Trimble, 7, and Blake Trimble, 4.
LaPorte County: Kamryn Nevaeh Kantowski was born at 12:58 a.m. at Indiana University Health LaPorte Hospital, weighing 6 pounds, 7 ounces. Her parents, Jennifer and Anthony Kantowski, Jr., of Michigan City, plan to celebrate the addition to the family with family photos this Saturday with big sisters Madison and Alexis.
