PORTAGE — A gunman and a man with a knife robbed the Portage Steak ’N Shake at about 4:40 a.m. Thursday.
No customers were inside the 24-hour restaurant, at 6231 U.S. 6, and neither of the employees working, a 19-year-old Hobart woman and a 29-year-old Portage man, was hurt.
The male employee told police they were in the kitchen when a man holding a knife snuck up behind him and told him to give him the money from the register. He handed over an undisclosed amount of cash as a second man, who was holding a gun pointed toward both employees, watched from the other side of the counter.
The employees did not see in which direction the robbers fled or whether they had a vehicle because they were ordered to lie on the floor. They could also give police only vague descriptions of the men — even their race is unknown — because both wore dark clothing and gloves, some type of mask, and aviator-style sunglasses. The man who displayed a black-handled knife was about 5 feet 7 inches tall, according to the police report. The second man was about 6 feet 3 inches tall and had a black handgun with a chrome barrel.
Police searched the area unsuccessfully, and no one at nearby businesses saw anyone matching the men’s descriptions.
