The Westville Correctional Facility arrested an officer trainee for trying to pass marijuana to an inmate Thursday morning.

Valparaiso resident Christine Evans, 28, was charged with attempted trafficking, a Class C felony.

Evans reported to work, and she was escorted to the Internal Affairs Office since she was believed to possess a green, leafy substance in a plastic bag. Correctional police officers arrested her and transported her to the LaPorte County Jail. The incident is still under investigation by the facility’s Internal Affairs Department to determine if any other individuals may be involved.

“We will not tolerate trafficking,” said Superintendent Mark Levenhagen. “Staff who bring in contraband endanger the safety of everyone, including those who work side by side with them.”

“It is regrettable that despite all our training and warnings, some staff simply refuse to accept the responsibility and trust we place in them,” said Indiana Department of Correction Commissioner Bruce Lemmon. “Constant vigilance is necessary to eliminate such abuses and maintain order within our facilities.”

Additional information concerning the arrest and pending charges can be obtained from the La Porte County Jail or the La Porte County Prosecutor’s Office.
