GARY — A divided School Board voted 4-3 Tuesday not to renew the contracts of 13 school administrators.
Five assistant principals given notices work at the academically struggling West Side Leadership Academy and the Lew Wallace STEM Academy.
Last year, the board transferred former West Side Principal Judy Dunlap to special assignment.
Attorney Daniel F. Friel said the administrators were notified of the action last month, per state law. They had the right to seek a hearing before the superintendent and a hearing before the board. He said only one administrator sought a hearing.
Friel said although the nonrenewal notices were approved by the board, it doesn’t preclude the district from moving the administrators into other positions. In recent years, the board has sent layoff notices to all of its administrators, rehiring them later in the year.
The notices must be received by Feb. 1 or the staffers automatically retain their jobs, he said.
Budget considerations were cited as one of the reasons for the nonrenewals.
New board member Antuwan Clemons opposed the nonrenewal motion in order to receive more information from Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt who did not attend the meeting. Board President Rosie Washington said the moves were discussed in a committee hearing last week.
The administrators recommended for nonrenewal are: Shashi Anand, special education psychologist; Stephanie Billups, Beveridge principal; Sandra Comer, special education supervisor; Judy Dunlap, special assignment; Edmund Fraire, special education director; Delores Gibson, West Side assistant principal.
Also, Andrew Greene, Lew Wallace assistant principal; Terri Ransom, associate gifted/talented; Robert Redding, West Side assistant principal; Earl Smith, supervisor physical education/athletics; Sarita Stevens, director of public information; Aurelia Weaver, Lew Wallace assistant principal and Charlotte Wright, Lew Wallace assistant principal.
