Valparaiso Police Officers Jerame Simpson and Keith Perez were named Officers of the Year by the Indiana Association of Chiefs of Police in a Wednesday morning ceremony in Indianapolis.
Simpson and Perez were honored for their actions during the May 25 hostage situation involving an armed man at the Prudential Building in Valparaiso. Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner nominated the men for evacuating a number of people from the building before confronting the gunman, former Valparaiso resident Roy Ferguson, and exchanging gunfire.
The standoff concluded with the male subject shooting himself; he died later that day.
No employees or emergency personnel were injured.
Police chiefs from across the state and numerous officers from the Valparaiso Police Department were present during the awards presentation.
