VALPARAISO — The Porter County Animal Shelter reported minor problems with two of the facility’s three furnaces Thursday.
Shelter director Jon Thomas said the motor in the furnace above the lobby went out Tuesday night and the lobby was cold Wednesday, but the motor had been repaired by Thursday morning.
The furnace serving the room where the dogs are kept has had intermittent problems for some time and is working, but not very well. It doesn’t get the 20 cages in the back of the room as warm as Thomas would like, and it will be replaced Friday or Monday, he said.
There haven’t been any problems with the third furnace, for the cat room.
“It’s a very old facility and stuff like that’s going to happen from time to time,” he said.
The county is working on plans for a new shelter in conjunction with the animal rescue organization Lakeshore PAWS.
