GARY — A Glen Park teen was shot in the back Thursday afternoon as he tried to drive away with another man’s car.
Devell Gayden, 19, who has home addresses in Chicago and Gary, is hospitalized under police guard while Detective Cpl. Jeff Hornyak investigates the incident, which began shortly after noon at 37th Avenue and Connecticut Street.
A resident who lives near that intersection told Patrolman Kwata Osborne he had just finished shoveling snow and was walking back inside his house while his car, a newer model white Chevrolet, was warming up in the driveway. He said he saw someone get into the car and start driving away very slowly. The icy road conditions prevented Gayden from accelerating, police spokeswoman Cpl. Gabrielle King said.
The 33-year-old resident walked alongside the car, telling the teen to stop and get out of his car, King said. When the car owner saw the teen reach into his coat, he fired a shot at Gayden, who continued driving west on 37th Avenue.
Police said that when Gayden reached Broadway, he may have seen patrol cars speeding in his direction because he suddenly backed up the victim’s car, striking a chain-link fence on the south side of the avenue.
Prosecutors will consider charges against Gayden and also review the shooting, police said.
