GARY — The man shot to death on a Tolleston street Monday night was identified Tuesday as Erich Beard, 39, of Gary.

About 6:30 p.m., Beard was shot as he stood outside 1209 Taft St. near a maroon truck, which police later towed to examine for evidence. He was struck by several bullets, and was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:13 p.m., a spokesman for the Lake County coroner said.

Witnesses in the area told police they heard an argument before they heard gunfire. Officers on the scene searched the area for a man witnesses said ran after Beard was wounded. One person who had seen Beard earlier that evening was questioned, but no one is in custody, police said

The victim’s name was not immediately released because police and deputy coroners first wanted to obtain positive identification and then notify his family.

An hour later, Tyson Carter, 29, arrived at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus with multiple gunshot wounds. He told police he was near 45th Avenue and Pennsylvania Street when a man with a gun started walking up to him. He ran from the area as the gunman fired in his direction, striking Carter in the upper body, police said. Police located a car with damage from bullets at 45th Avenue and Delaware Street and towed it for evidence, Lt. Del Stout is investigating the shooting. Anyone with information can call him at 881-7439.

Beard’s death is the fifth homicide this year in the city, two more violent deaths than the same time in 2012.

Anyone with information about the crime can call Detective Cpl. James Nielsen at 881-4754 or Detective Lorenzo Davis at 881-4738 or the police department’s anonymous crime tip hot line at 1 (866) 274-6347.
