EAST CHICAGO — An Indiana Harbor woman died late Tuesday night from multiple gunshot wounds.
Earnestine Tarver, 50, was standing in the backyard of a house in the 3900 block of Fern Street in the city’s Indiana Harbor section about 10:30 p.m. when witnesses reported hearing several shots.
A resident on the block brought Tarver into his home, where she was pronounced dead at 10:50 p.m., a news release from the Lake County coroner said.
East Chicago Lt. Marguerite Wilder said investigators are still talking to residents and other potential witnesses to determine what the victim was doing in the backyard when she was shot.
The man who came to Tarver’s aid heard the gunfire and saw her collapse near the backyard fence, police said.
Wilder declined to comment on a motive for the slaying, said the investigation is still in its early stages.
“We would certainly like to hear from anyone who has information about this,” Wilder said.
She said anyone with any details about the shooting can call the detective bureau at 391-8318 or the department’s anonymous tip line at (219) 391-8500.
