LOWELL — Three people died in a crash Monday morning in the 7500 block of Belshaw Road.
Patti Van Til, spokeswoman for the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, said police found a 2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo resting on its roof in Cedar Creek, adjacent to Belshaw Road at 7:07 a.m. Police said a woman and male were found dead, submerged in the water.
When the car was lifted from the water, the driver, identified as Raymond Rodriguez, 21, of Lake Village, was found dead in the driver’s seat. Police identified the female passenger as Sasha Spencer, 20, also of Lake Village, which is in northern Newton County.
The Lake County Coroner’s office identified the third passenger as Dustin M. Gregolunas, 40, of DeMotte. He was pronounced dead at 8:35 a.m. Van Til said the initial investigation revealed the car was traveling east on Belshaw Road and went off the road into the grass at the apex of a curve. The car went airborne and struck a tree, then went into the creek and came to rest on its roof.
Police said aggressive driving could be a factor in the crash.
Assisting agencies included the Indiana Department of Natural Resources, the Cedar Lake and Lowell fire department dive teams, the Crown Point Fire Department and Lake Hills Fire Department.
