GARY — Officials from Indiana and Illinois will hold a closed-door summit Thursday to discuss the flow of guns across state lines.
Following the 2 p.m. discussion, a news conference is slated for 3:45 p.m. at the Genesis Center, said Chelsea Stalling, spokeswoman for Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson.
Cook County, Ill., Sheriff Tom Dart is hosting the summit, which he called “long overdue” in a letter to invited law enforcement guests last week.
Invited guests include Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy, Gary Police Chief Wade Ingram and Lake County Sheriff John Buncich. The summit was originally planned for Friday at the Gary Public Safety Facility.
About 20 percent of the guns recovered by Chicago police from 2008 to 2012 were purchased in Indiana, according to the University of Chicago Crime Lab.
