INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Former Indiana Gov. Edgar Whitcomb has become a newlywed — at age 95.
Whitcomb and his 83-year-old bride, Evelyn, married Feb. 16 in a ceremony at their home overlooking the Ohio River in the Perry County town of Rome.
The Indianapolis Star reports the two met 12 years ago at a computer class and have been together ever since.
They said they decided to marry after friends who had married at their home five years ago came to visit. They married on the friends’ anniversary, with their friends as the only witnesses. A neighbor who’s a Methodist minister performed the ceremony.
Whitcomb was a Japanese prisoner of war during World War II and Indiana’s secretary of state before being elected governor in 1968 and serving four years.
