Gary/Chicago airport appeals tower shutdown

GARY — The Gary/Chicago International Airport has appealed the Federal Aviation Administration’s sequester shutdown of its air traffic control tower.
Interim Airport Director Steve Landry confirmed Wednesday that a letter was written and submitted Tuesday to the FAA.
Airport Project Manager Robert Gyurko on Monday said the airport on Friday received the letter from the FAA outlining the appeals process for keeping the tower opened past April 7, the day in which 238 municipal and regional airport towers are slated to close.
Gyurko said the letter specified that an airport’s role in national security would be considered appealable, but loss of local jobs wouldn’t.
