A former couple are in custody after admitting to touching an infant sexually, with the abuse possibly beginning when the girl was around 9 months old.
Text messages between James Glanders, 21, of Michigan City, and Dana Haywood, 19, of Portage, showed graphic discussions of the baby, now 11 months old, also played heavily in their phone sex, according to police affidavits.
Glanders, arrested Wednesday, was charged with Class A felony child molesting. Haywood, arrested Thursday, was charged with Class B felony child molesting and Class D felony neglect of a dependent.
Haywood contacted police on March 3, saying she saw Glanders lick the baby’s genitals about a month before, after changing her diaper in Haywood’s vehicle at Haven Hollow Park in South Haven. She did not report it immediately, she claimed, because Glanders told her no one would believe her and because she was afraid of him.
Around that time, Haywood also got a court order prohibiting Glanders from having contact with her and the baby. However, the messages on Glanders’ phone, which he handed over willingly after waiving his rights, police said, showed Haywood continued speaking with him between the time she contacted police and their arrests.
When a detective questioned Glanders on Wednesday, he initially said the accusations were based on Haywood’s jealousy and controlling nature. When a voice stress test showed he was being deceptive, however, Glanders admitted he did “it” with Haywood’s encouragement, according to an affidavit by Detective Gene Hopkins of the Porter County Sheriff’s Department.
After arresting Glanders, police questioned Haywood again. As they prepared to do a voice stress test to determine if her alleged deviate behavior was limited to talk, she allegedly admitted to licking and touching the girl sexually about two months ago, claiming Glanders told her to do it.
