GARY — Indiana University Northwest campus officials said Wednesday they monitored Tuesday’s incident at the IUPUI campus closely after reports surfaced that a man had a gun on the downtown Indianapolis campus.
IUPUI campus police issued an alert and ordered a campus lockdown for four hours while police searched for the man.
The lockdown was lifted after police learned the student did not actually see the man she thought had a gun in the truck of his car. The alerts triggered some confusion at IUPUI as the university’s Twitter account originally called the incident a “lockdown” then revised it to “full alert.”
Some students and students remained sheltered in buildings, fearing the worst. Some instructors held class as usual.
IUN officials said it has an “IU Notify” system in place, which can quickly alert the entire campus of emergency notifications via SMS texts, emails, phone messages, social media posts, on-campus digital signage, and IUN.edu homepage alerts.
The university also has a crisis management team that discusses crisis planning regularly, along with tabletop exercises.
