A 19-year-old Merrillville man pleaded guilty Thursday in Lake Superior Court to reckless homicide in exchange for an eight-year sentence.
Angel L. Garcia admitted he got into a verbal dispute with Brian McCoy on April 7, 2011, at 600 E. 48th Ave., in Gary. The argument turned physical and Garcia and McCoy began struggling. Garcia fired a handgun and shot McCoy, 39.
The plea agreement calls for dismissal of the original charges of murder and murder in perpetration of a robbery, which are punishable by 45 to 65 years in prison.
A sentencing hearing is scheduled for April 24 before Judge Clarence Murray.
Garcia’s plea agreement specifies that he must serve his sentence in the Indiana Department of Correction.
