Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore superintendent retiring in August

Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Park Superintendent Costa Dillon will retire in August after 35 years in the National Park Service.
Dillon released a statement Wednesday, saying “it is time to move onto something else.”
“There is a lot going on at Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore and many great things in the future of this park,” Dillon wrote in an email. “It will not be easy to leave, but it will be with the confidence that the excellent people who work here, and the people in the community who support the park, will continue to preserve and protect it for future generations.”
Dillon declined an interview request regarding his future until he gets closer to his retirement date.
Park spokesman Bruce Rowe said it will take five or six months for the next park superintendent to be hired and on board at the park. Rowe said the job will be advertised for a month, and applicants are culled down to a relative few, who are interviewed by the regional director. The selection must garner approval at the NPS headquarters in Washington, D.C. Once the hire is announced, that person will be given a month to wrap up their previous post and move to the new park.
Dillon started his National Park Service career in 1978 at Independence National Historical Park in Philadelphia, which encompasses Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell. He’s worked at more than a dozen parks in 10 states — including Gettysburg National Military Park and Fire Island National Seashore — and served on temporary assignments at more than 30 other parks. He was superintendent of the Horace M. Albright Training Center at Grand Canyon National Park from 2002 to 2007.
He’s garnered several awards throughout his career: the Stephen T. Mather Award from the National Parks Conservation Association, the National Park Service Sequoia Award and the Secretary of the Interior’s Award for Long-Term Achievement in Diversity.
