One to be charged in shooting of Hobart Dairy Queen window

Updated: June 10, 2013 2:06PM

An 18-year-old Hobart man will likely be charged this week with shooting a BB gun out of his car as he drove past the downtown Dairy Queen on Main Street on Tuesday night.

No one was injured in the shooting.

Sgt. Jeremy Ogden said the man — a high school dropout — wasn’t targeting anyone, but the suspect told police it was a “stupid mistake.”

Police aren’t releasing the man’s name until he is charged.

Ogden said the man was arrested along with three other people — one adult male and two juvenile females — in a gray Oldsmobile near South Lake Park Avenue and Laura Lane shortly after the 8:30 p.m. incident. Another juvenile female had been dropped off before they were pulled over.

Ogden said one of the females was egging him on to shoot the gun. Two of the juveniles could face charges as a result.

Ogden said police formed a perimeter and quickly relayed a vehicle description to officers. A patrol officer saw a vehicle matching the description and someone in the car tossed an object from the vehicle before the officer signaled for the driver to stop.

Police found BB cartridges in a passenger side compartment and the gun in the trunk. Ogden said another man and two juvenile females were eventually released.

Witnesses told police that the air pistol shattered the outer pane of two of the restaurant’s windows, but the inner pane wasn’t damaged thus preventing any injuries inside the restaurant.
