A makeshift memorial for a correctional officer who was killed while jogging will be taken down before the man charged in connection with her death goes on trial.

Lake Superior Court Judge Salvador Vasquez granted a request by attorneys representing Jason R. Cozmanoff to remove the memorial for Britney Meux, 25, a Lake County correctional officer who died March 6, 2012, as she was running along West 93rd Avenue in Crown Point near the Lake County Government Center. A sheriff’s hat, flowers and memorabilia are at the site near the north entrance to the complex.

Cozmanoff, 43, of Lakes of the Four Seasons, is scheduled for a jury trial starting June 24 on charges of reckless homicide, four counts of criminal recklessness, failure to stop after an accident resulting in death and three counts of failure to stop after an accident resulting in serious bodily injury.

Three other correctional officers — David Murchek, Delano Scaife and Latasha Johnson —were injured in the crash.

Cozmanoff has pleaded not guilty. Four of the felony counts filed against him a week after the crash are Class C felonies that are punishable by two to eight years.
