A semi fire brought northbound traffic on Interstate 65 to a standstill Wednesday morning.

Around 7:32 a.m., a preliminary investigation by Master Trooper Brian White showed that an orange 2006 Freightliner semi pulling a box trailer, driven by Christopher Woodard, 35, of Park Forest, Ill., was northbound on I-65 near the Ridge Road exit when he noticed smoke coming from his exhaust stacks. Shortly, thereafter his semi tractor began to burn.

The tractor became fully engulfed and his box trailer, which was loaded with canned food, sustained smoke damage. The semi was owned by Schneider National Carriers out of Gary. Woodard was not injured. The semi was coming from Gas City, Ind., headed to Chicago.

All lanes northbound on I-65 were shut down for about 90 minutes to extinguish the fire. Southbound lanes were affected due to heavy smoke coming across the interstate. All lanes northbound were re-opened at 9:08 a.m.
